Evaluation of the role of xerostomia in burning mouth syndrome

Abstract

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a painful condition characterized by burning sensation at the tongue, palato and/or gingiva, in the absence of primary injury or any disease. The most accepted theory is the disinhibition of the trigeminal nerve by the corda tympani nerve dysfunction. On the other hand, it is known that xerostomia can also cause burning mouth due to the role of saliva in the transduction of sensory information at the oral cavity and that patients with BMS can also have dry mouth due to the drugs used in the chronic pain treatment. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the orofacial, feeding, xerostomia and gastrointestinal complaints and the salivary flow of patients with BMS with the association or not of topic antixerostomic treatment. Forty patients with BMS using amytriptiline will be randomized distributed into 2 groups: Study (20 patients treated with urea 10%) and Control Group (20 patients treated with placebo). The double-blinded evaluations (before and after 3 months from the start of the treatment) will include the Clinical Protocol of orofacial pain EDOF-HC, questionnaire for xerostomia, evaluation of somesthetic (cold, warm, tactile and pain with QST Somedic and IITC systems), gustative and olfactory sensibilities, and the salivary flow. Finally, the data will be statistically analyzed with the tests Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA. The level of significance will be 5%. (AU)
