Abstract

Photoinitiated polymerization is a process widely used in several applications, i.e., among in dentistry (restorations), painting (drying and curing), and photomicrolithography (printed circuit boards). Whereas many studies deal with these processes from a global point of view, only few studies are aimed to determine the basic parameters of the elemental reactions involved in the global processes, intending to establish the mechanisms of global polymerization. The same can be said related to correlations between the properties of these materials and the polymerization conditions. Therefore, this proposal is a continuation of this type studies (that have are being performed in our Research Group for a number of years) with special emphasis on the reactions present in photopolymerizations initiated by mixtures of initiators, in photopolymerizations in the presence of microparticles and photopolymerizations in hydrotropic media. In all cases, the overall rates of reaction will be interpreted in terms of the rates of the individual elemental processes. Similarly, global polymerization yields of will be determined and correlated with the quantum yields of each photochemical stage. At the same time, in some cases, the physical and chemical properties of the obtained polymers will be measured and correlated with the polymerization conditions, through the influence of the polymerization rates on the structure of the materials.
