Abstract
Natural Language Generation (NLG) systems - which produce text from non-linguistic data - are used in a wide range of applications for visualizing complex or otherwise large data sets. NLG techniques also play a major role in many other NLP applications, such as Machine Translation, Text Summarization, Semantic Web interfaces etc. even though as a research field NLG remains relatively little explored by the scientific community in Brazil. Based on our previous PhD project in this area, we propose a first wide-coverage research project of this kind: the study and design of hybrid surface realisation models for Brazilian Portuguese, which will be taken as a basis for further research and development of NLG applications, with the long-term goal of establishing a NLG research group at this institution.
