Process optimization in sugarcane industry

Abstract

Brazil is the world's largest sugarcane (Saccharum spp) producer. This culture is responsible for 25% of the world's yield, with a turnover of more than R$ 40 billion a year, and direct employment for more than 3,6 million workers in 354 industries. It is an important socioeconomic crop providing the raw material for three important agro-industries: sugar, spirits and alcohol. The country export 17.2 million tonnes of sugar and 2.5 billion liters of ethanol, generating an average investment in the country of 3 billion dollars per year, which shows the great importance of sugarcane to the Brazilian economy. The businesses of this area acquire large dimensions, the sector faces new challenges, promoting strong impact on the economic, productive, agrarian, environment and social questions. To achieve and sustain all this development, the culture and the productivity of the sugarcane need to grow and the management of the plants needs to advance in efficiency. This requires a great amount of investments in administrative rationalization in the processing units. In this aspect, mathematical modeling and optimization techniques can be of great assistance. The aim is that these techniques contribute to the optimization of the process, can be used as important sources of production estimates, making calculations and helping decisions. (AU)
