Serum amyloid A and adiponectin: characterization in postmenopausal breast cancer and relationship with obesity

Abstract

Obesity has been shown to be responsible for the increase of 30 to 50% in the rate of breast cancer in post-menopausal women. Adipose tissue secreted proteins, serum amyloid A (SAA) and adiponectin show respectively positive and negative association with obesity and many studies that have been focused on the onset and progression of breast cancer in post-menopausal women refer the importance of adipokines in both processes. Objectives: To explore the association of obesity related adipokines - SAA and adiponectin - and breast cancer prognosis. Subjects and Methods: Plasma and immunohistochemical expression of SAA and adiponectin will be compared between two groups of post-menopausal women bearing breast cancer: the first group will be composed by eutrophic women with no abdominal fat and the second by overweight or obese women, with presence of abdominal fat. The comparison between the groups will be performed by using the chi-square, Fisher's exact or Mann-Whitney U-test. The continuous independent variables will be subject to analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) adjusting for control variables. The correlation of serum / tissue levels between the two adipokines and the correlation of serum versus tissue levels of adipokines will be performed by Pearson or Spearman correlation test. And the hypothesis that higher SAA and smaller adiponectin levels are factors associated with poor prognosis of breast cancer in obese post-menopausal women will be checked by the logistic regression model analysis. The statistical analyses will be performed using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) for Windows, version 9.1 and the results will be considered significant at the probability value (p) < 0.05.
