Characterization of laser treated surfaces by X-ray diffraction

Abstract

Lasers have attracted much attention for the materials processing, including in surface engineering. Among the various laser surface processing of materials techniques, this work will study five types: Laser controlled fracture is a micromachining method used to guide a crack through a desired path in order to create a controlled fracture. Microtexturing is a technique for changing the chemical properties and the roughness of the materials surface using pulsed lasers. Microstructuring consists on producing microscopic dimples at the materials surface aiming create tiny liquid reservoirs. Laser carburization is a process for create carbides (hard phase in steels) at the materials surface by reacting carbon and steel under the laser. Laser hardening is the process of generating martensite at the surface of ferrous alloys. All these process have been chosen in order to create a knowledge database for the development of aerospace materials. X-ray diffraction will be employed in all processes in order to give information on phase transformations, residual stress fields and average grain size. (AU)
