Abstract

The project aims the installation of a reference laboratory for the measurement of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD). 25OHD is the vitamin D metabolite that best represents sufficiency/insufficiency of this vitamin. Vitamin D deficiency is being appointed as a very prevalent problem in a series of populations, including Brazilian populations. The diagnosis of this condition, specially in old populations and patients with end stage renal disease, as well as its follow-up, is of paramount importance. Current methodologies for the measurement of 25OHD present problems of reproducibility and accuracy, as well as cost. The availability of a refence laboratory capable of measuring 25OHD by a reference method (HPLC-UV) would be of interest for the scientific and medical community. (AU)
