Evaluation of mitral valve annulus mobility after less stented bioprostheses implantation in sheep

Abstract

Some papers show that the mitral valve annulus is a dynamic structure which contracts and relax during systole and diastole. The less stented bioprostheses is a new concept. The annulus of the less stented bioprostheses is discontinuous on three points getting more flexibility to the support annulus. Therefore, the less stented bioprostheses presents more flexibility to the mitral valve annulus and may be implanted easily like a conventional bioprostheses. This study aims to evaluate the mitral valve annulus mobility, ecocardiographic parameters and the functionality and integrity of the less stented bioprosteses in mitral position. Sixteen adults sheep will be submitted to bioprostheses (less stented or conventional) implantation in mitral position. Immediately after implantation and 90 days after implantation, each animal will be submitted to ecocardiographic study which will analyze transprosthetic gradient, valvular area, prostheses competency and mobility, left ventricle ejection faction and cardiac stroke. After the second ecocardiographic study, each animal will have the heart and great vessels removed and analyzed macroscopically according to the following parameters: functionality and integrity of the procedure, integrity of the tissues (valves and myocardium) and presence or absence of periprostheses leaking. Both bioporsthesis data will be analyzed and compared with appropriate statistical tests. (AU)
