Abstract
The Asian ladybug, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas, 1773) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), has been frequently studied because of its enormous potential as a biological control agent, high level of adaptation to different regions and controversies about its negative impact caused to other species of ladybugs. After invading several regions in the world, H. axyridis will be able to establish permanent populations in those locations. Such fact emphasizes the need to increase the knowledge to take advantage of the benefits related with the potential that H.axyridis has as agent of biological control and how to reduce the adverse effects that H. axyridis causes when acts as a pest. Some researchers have observed the necessity of studies on the response of H. axyridis to varied environmental conditions in order to improve the knowledge about its population dynamics and the potential to reach distribution in South America. Other authors have emphasized the need for comparative research about the predatory and reproductive ability of H. axyridis on other aphidophagous predators to evaluate its dominance potential on native coccinellid species. Despite the existence of many studies on H. axyridis in several countries, in Brazil, where this ladybug has been recently recorded, there are few information on its behavior, predation potential, biology, food preference and competition with other coccinellid species. The objective of this study is: a) To evaluate biological aspects and the predation potential of H. axyridis in relation to C. sanguinea and H. convergens fed with Schizaphis graminum (Rondani)(Hemiptera: Aphididae); b) To determinate the thermal requirements and life tables of H. axyridis fed with eggs of Anagasta kueniella (Zeller, 1879) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and c) To evaluate the intraguild predation among H. axyridis, C. sanguinea and H. convergens.
