Abstract

Sugarcane is the second largest energy source in Brazil, behind oil and its derivates, and larger than hydroelectricity. Due to environmental laws manual harvesting, which demands the previous burning of the sugarcane fields, is continuously decreasing leaving room to the expansion of mechanized harvesting. Mechanization presents a vital role in the energy demand of an agricultural production system. The demanded energy does not approach only the consumed fuels, but also the machinery manufacturing and maintenance. This project aims to determine the energy demand throughout the life cycle of a sugarcane self-propelled harvester. The expected results are the determination of the energy demand as well the material flow required. The first will be useful to evaluate the actual energy potential of this important energy crop and the latter will give subsidies for further environmental studies. (AU)
