Abstract
The region of the basin of the river Ribeira de Iguape in SP represents one of the few and rather well conserved remnants of Atlantic Rainforest, in which one finds long-standing human populations and from different ethnic origins. The region represents a challenge, in the sense of trying to reconcile the conflicting interests which act upon it, principally that of the possibility of conservation of the forests and of the occupation of the forests by populations which develop their culture and way of life there. A study will be undertaken, made up of 3 subprojects, which aim to study and research traditional knowledge for the use and management of local natural resources related to flora, with the contribution of Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology, as well as analyze chemical and ecological aspects of vegetal species of use to the local human populations, using data from previously undertaken surveys. The work will be carried out by a multi and pluridisciplinary team, from UNESP, UEL, Fiocruz and a local NGO, with the support and participation of local communities. (AU)
