Abstract

Riparian areas are essential in maintaining the cycle and the quality of water. Besides the role in maintaining hydrological functions of those sites, soil attributes and processes can determine the type of vegetation and can be expressed in soil morphology, that therefore can be used to infer the type of environment, vegetation physiognomy or species. We aim to understand the influence of water table and soil attributes in physiognomic gradient between riparian forest and cerrado and evaluate soil morphology as an indicator of this gradient. The study will comprise 25 plots of 100 m2 of native vegetation and such gradient, located perpendicular to the main drainage, at Campinas, SP The soil will be studied in ten pits, and by auger sampling in the remaining plots, with morphological, chemical and particle-size distribution evaluation. Water table level will be monitored over a year in six water table monitoring wells set up on the plots. Floristic and structural data survey of woody species will be carried out at all plots. Data will be analyzed by parametric statistics and multivariate analysis. Analysis of variance will test the hypothesis of attributes (soil physical and chemical properties, water table level and vegetation structure) differentiation along transects, differences among treatments given by the differences in water regime of plots. Environmental and vegetation attributes ordination by canonical correspondence analysis will show soil and hydrology associations. The possible grouping of the plots on the different types of vegetation, through similarity analysis, will be compared with the attributes that indicates the hydrological regime of these plots as soil color and water table. Results will broaden our knowledge on the water and soil role to vegetation establishment in riparian environments. (AU)
