Abstract

The end of the cytochrome oxidase I gene was recently proposed as a marker to identify all animal species. The few studies with birds show that this mitochondrial region can successfully achieve this goal. In the present proposal, we intend to sequence oxidase I from at least 100 species of birds that occur in areas within the Atlantic Forest where VALE S.A. is active. We will analyze the intra and inter specific variability and each sequence will be compared to those deposited in BOLD (The DNA Barcode of Life Data System). We will also make clustering analyses based on a genetic distance method. The data we will generate will contribute to a quick species identification of bird samples that cannot be morphologically identified. This is useful in cases that involve collisions with aircrafts, individuals apprehended from the illegal trade (e.g. non-hatched embryos and chicks), and border control against invasive species. All these actions can help in management plans designed to conserve birds. (AU)
