Abstract

The genus Spatuloricaria was originally proposed to include a single species, S. phelpsi from Maracaibo Basin, Venezuela. Later, eight species formerly in Loricaria were transferred to Spatuloricaria, and currently the genus comprises 12 nominal species. The genus is poorly studied and several questions remain about the validity of its species. Spatuloricaria has been diagnosed by a combination of characters and no putative synapomorphy is known to support its monophyly. Naturally, its position among other Loricariinae is still unresolved. The aim of this project is to conduct a taxonomic review of Spatuloricaria based on all available material in collections worldwide, including examination of all type specimens. Concomitantly, a phylogenetic hypothesis will be erected for all species recognized in the revision, on the basis of comparative data from external morphology and osteology. Numerous outgroup loricariid taxa will be included in the analysis, so that the results will be relatively wide-ranging and permit robust resolution of the relevant questions, including the monophyly of Spatuloricaria and its position among other Loricariinae.
