Abstract

Esophageal cancer is the eighth most frequent neoplasm worldwide, and the gastric and colorectal cancers are among the five most incidents. Together, these cancers are among the six leading causes of cancer deaths in the world today. Traditional therapy for cancer consists of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. These therapies can limit the intake and absorption of nutrients, with consequent impairment of nutritional status of cancer patients. Periodic nutritional assessment should be part of routine treatment of cancer patients as they influence susceptibility to infection, response to therapy and prognosis. Objectives: The purpose is to assess the nutritional status of patients with esophageal cancer, gastric and colorectal cancers/. This will be achieved through the Subjective Global Assessment Produced by the patient (ASG-PPP), also serum albumin, transferrin, prealbumin and adiponectin, bioelectrical impedance and Nutritional Risk Index (NRI). Another objective is to determine which method is the most accurate for diagnosing changes in nutritional status of these patients. Methods: The method will consist of evaluating 200 patients with confirmed diagnosis of esophageal, gastric or colorectal cancer, being 100 in chemotherapy and /or radiotherapy, and 100 in follow up after treatment of cancer for more than 36 months from the Department of Gastro-oncology UNIFESP. Another 100 subjects without diagnosis of any cancer constitute the control group. The nutritional status will be reviewed by ASG-PPP, NRI, BMI and bioelectrical impedance. The determination of plasma albumin, prealbumin, transferrin and adiponectin levels of patients, will be performed through blood tests. (AU)
