Abstract

Few studies quantify the relative risk of human health based on research done in animal populations, which is crucial in understanding the natural history of zoonotic diseases. In this context the coccidian, in particular the family Sarcocystidae are important agents transmitted in interphase human - domestic and wild animals, and its diagnosis is hampered by limited availability of samples, without damaging the natural population of an endangered species. Our main contribution is in the molecular detection of coccidian parasites, with special emphasis on Toxoplasma gondii, in neotropical felids with the use of samples of specimens deposited in the collections of natural history museums of Rio Grande do Sul State, which until now no study has yet been made.
