Abstract

This study aims to evaluate several known laser wavelengths compared to a new wavelength in Neurosurgery/Orthopedics area, mainly discectomies. Thirty six lumbar spine (L1-L5) from Landrace pigs will go through a percutaneous laser discectomy using a diode laser of 808, 980, 14700 and 1940nm, 2,5mm spot size and 10W of power, for 808 - 1470nm lasers and 5W for the 1940nm laser, on a total of 120 pulses, 1 second each pulse, irradiated through a 18-gauge needle inserted under radioscopic control. Tissues will be evaluated for penetration depth, amount of extracted tissue and residual thermal injury using the Kruskal Wallis and Fishers exact test. Expected results are that the 1940nm laser will provide better results with less thermal lesions. (AU)
