Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the incidence and the perceptions in relation to occupational exposures to potentially infectious biologic materials, among undergraduate students. A convenience sample will be selected among dental students at Araraquara School of Dentistry - UNESP, and will be included by invitation only the students that already perform dental treatment in patients. This research has two objectives. The first one is to conduct a descriptive cross-sectional study in a universe of 210 students of the 3rd to 5th grades, in order to verify the occurrence of occupational exposures and their frequency, the characteristics of the injuries, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at the moment of the accident. The second aim is to conduct a qualitative analysis of the feelings experienced after occupational exposure and the attitudes performed in the post accident by dental students. The first study will be done by means of a questionnaire application form that will be applied to undergraduate students, aiming to reach the majority of volunteers. Data will be tabulated and descriptive statistics will be applied. The second study will be conducted by means of a qualitative analysis. Qualitative interviews will be based on opened questions and each interview will be recorded. Their speeches will be transcribed in paper in order to be analyzed, and the QUALI-QUANTISOFT software, which allows the Analysis of the Collective Speeches (DSC) according to three methodological figures: central ideas, key-expressions and the DSC itself (Lefèvre & Lefèvre, 2003). The present research aims to describe the frequency and nature of occupational accidents resulting from occupational exposure to infected biological material, and to verify the feelings and attitudes on how to proceed after the occurrence of injuries, so as to implement teaching strategies, enhancing and facilitating the access and compliance to protocols, and encouraging the reporting of these injuries.
