Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop a process for the production of porous bodies made up from the agglomeration of active carbon fines (carbon block). The proposed process uses as binder phenolic resins and, by thermal treatment at high temperatures, promotes the carbonization of these resins to produce a carbon-carbon composite which retains no traces of the components of those resins, forming carbon block which produced in this way is suitable for the use of the treatment of water for human consumption. The proposal is also to define the adsorption properties, of this carbon block, of organic chemical compounds which may be contained in waters supplied for consumption by treatment stations. In Brazil, lack of knowledge concerning levels of these contaminations is considerable, but certainly they are bound to exist in a high degree and are derived from high levels of pollution caused by agricultural defensives carried into the rivers from which many cities take their water for human consumption.
