A generic method for stereoscopic video coding

Abstract

Nowadays the production of 3D video content (named stereoscopic video) is growing, mainly due to the acceptance and interest of the users for this kind of technology. This reflects increased investment from the film, television and games industries in order to bring 3D to their products and devices, offering different ways to interact with the user. Consequently, new techniques for capturing, encoding and playback 3D video are emerging or being improved in order to optimize and integrate this technology with the available infrastructure. In spite of the advances made in the field of coding, there is a lack for a standard applicable for all stereoscopic video viewing methods. Today, there is a different encoding technique for each viewing method, incompatible with each other. Thus, this proposal is to develop a coding method that is generic, able to generate stereo video without significant losses both in quality and in depth perception and, at the same time, independent of the viewing method.
