Abstract

The thymus is an important immunological organ during fetal life and in the neonatal period, for an individual to become immunocompetent, has à key role in cellular immune response, and also participates in some humoral immune responses. Treatises have benefited from modern tools for the study of cell and molecular biology in order to improve the understanding of physiological, or pathological processes not yet understood, as with the thymus' organ. Understanding the mechanism of control of gene expression of growth factors related to vascularization of the thymus during fetal development may help to clarify important points have not seen in the literature regarding the maturation of the organ and thus provide data for understanding the its involution. This study aims to quantify the vascularization of the thymus at different stages of pregnancy through the method of stereological "disector physical" as well as analyze the gene and protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors (Flt-1 and KDR) by PCR in real time and immunohistochemistry, respectively, in addition to studying morphological features of the vascularization inherent to the species concerned.
