Abstract

On the last decades, nosocomial infections due to gram-negative multiresistant microorganisms have spread worldwide in the hospital setting, leading to the rising of intra-hospital mortality rates as well as the healthcare direct and indirect costs. Probiotics are microorganisms known to be non-pathogenic for the human host and for their ability to promote human health, through interacting with the immune system and also by competition with pathogenic microorganisms. Our objective is to evaluate whether probiotics could affect the clearance of Gram-negative multiresistant microorganisms from the digestive tract, on patients admitted to a tertiary acute-care hospital, by means of a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial. We aim to include 62 patients known to be colonized or infected by gram-negative multiresistant microorganisms and randomize them to swallow a capsule containing Lactobacillus spp. commercially available in Brazil or a placebo, twice daily for two weeks or at least until hospital discharge, in the case of a short length of stay. The main outcome to be evaluated will be the length of the colonization by Gram-negative multiresistant microorganisms, which will be compared by a Kaplan-Meier analysis. (AU)
