Abstract

Maternal haploids are obtained, in maize, when haploid-inducing lines are used as a pollinator. The haploids’ chromosomic duplication makes it possible to reduce by two to three times the occurrence of homozygote strains, compared to the traditional method. Practical experience with the use of maternal double-haploids has indicated that the strains obtained in this manner display, on average, greater combination capacity than those obtained by selffertilization. The main objective of this project is to introduce in Brazil populations of maize with haploid- inducing genes, developed and used commercially in Europe and the United States. These inducing populations will be evaluated as for their adaptability for planting in the state of São Paulo, as for the agronomic and phytosanitary characteristics, and as to their comparative efficiency in the generation and identification of maternal haploids in tropical germplasma of hard and dentate grain. Techniques recommended for the chromosomic duplication of the maternal haploids will also be evaluated and a start made on intergression of haploidinducing genes in the company’s elite tropical strains. The project will constitute the basis of a program for the production of maize hybrids. The commercialization of strains will help national companies to compete in the oligopolized market, increasing the sector’s competitiveness. (AU)
