Effects of ketamine/guafenesin and butorphanol/guaifenesin combinations in mules (Equus caballus X Equus asinus) pre-medicated with midazolam and medetomidine and submitted to elective orquiectomy

Abstract

Information about anesthetic protocols for chemical restraint in mules is scarce, which made the improvement of analgesic and chemical restraint techniques desired. Thus; the present study aim to compare cardiorespiratory effects, induction and anesthetic recovery of two drugs (ketamine and butorphanol) combined to guaifenesin for induction and maintenance of anesthesia in mules. 12 adult male mules will be randomly divided in two groups and anesthetized as follows: Group 1 - pre-medication with 0.2 mg/kg (i.m.) of midazolam; after 15 minutes 0.02 mg/kg (i.v.) of detomidine. After five minutes, it will be manually administrated (i.v.) by free gravity flow a 5% glucose infusion of guaifenesin (50 mg/ml) and ketamine (2 mg/ml) combination until animals became in a lateral recumbency. Then; a infusion rate of 2.2 ml/kg/hr of the same infusion will be administrated for a anesthetic maintenance during 60 minutes; Group 2 - Pre-medication as in Group 1; after five minutes manually administration (i.v.) by free gravity flow of 5% glucose infusion of guaifenesin (50 mg/ml) and butorphanol (22.5 µg/ml) combination until lateral recumbency; followed by continuous infusion of 2.2 ml/kg/hr of the same infusion during 60 min. The follows parameters will be recorded every five minutes of anesthesia: heart and respiratory rates, SpO2, systolic, diastolic and medium arterial blood pressures and rectal temperature. It will be also measured each 20 minutes: PaO2, PaCO2, SaO2 pH, BE, HCO3- ions and lactate. The quality of induction and anesthetic recovery will be evaluated using a behavioural ethogram and visual analogical scales. The parametric data will be analyzed using ANOVA test followed by Tukey and the non-parametric data using Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Wilcoxon. P < 0.05 will be considered significant. (AU)
