Abstract
In this project, a geophysical study of two basaltic impact craters of the Paraná Basin, namely Vista Alegre (diameter H 9,5 km) and Vargeao (diameter H 12 km) is proposed. This study will be focused on acquisition, processing and interpretation of terrestrial gravimetric and magnetometric data. The goal of the field surveys will be the detailed geophysical characterization of the structures and the 2D as well as 3D subsurface modeling. Although common on other terrestrial planets and their moons, impact craters formed in basalt are rare on Earth and there are only a few examples known to date. These rare terrestrial basaltic craters can provide important information on the effects of impacts in basaltic targets. In a more general context, the results of this project can possibly contribute to the understanding of the genesis, formation, structure and deformation of these impact craters and to the understanding of the crustal evolution of the Parana Basin.
