Abstract

The root caries is a disease whose occurrence is closely related to adult and elderly populations and to consider the phenomenon of aging observed in Brazil, it is expected to increase in prevalence and incidence of these lesions, justifying researches related to root caries. The aims of this study will be compare the biofilm microbial profile formed in patients with root caries lesion in early stages, before and after the use of dentifrice containing 1450 ppm of fluoride in a dicalcium phosphate dihydrate base (DCPD) with addition of arginine 1,5%; and to compare the biofilm microbial profile formed in patients with and without remineralized lesions after using this dentifrice. A sub-sample of 60 volunteers were randomly selected from the main study sample (n = 260), 30 in the control group and 30 of the study group. The biofilm was collected in two stages of the project (baseline and 6 months) and the samples will be analyzed with PCR-DGGE and DNA sequencing. The outcome of this work will be the microbial profile that will be described according to age groups, gender and amount of biofilm. The analysis will be undertaken on the initial and 6 months in both the control and the experimental group. The comparison of this outcome will be made between the subjects with lesions that remineralized and those who did not. Expected results: It is expected that the dentifrice containing arginine change the biofilm microbial profile formed in its presence demonstrating its preventive action on the occurrence of root caries lesions at an early stage.
