Abstract

The Lameness is the main cause of referral horses to veterinarians and a leading cause of referral these animals to Hospitals. Long bones fractures and joint fractures have the lower success rate, because of the high cost of the treatment and poor prognosis. The must be understood success the return of the horse to its previous athletic performance or at least to have useful life. The proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) is clinically important because the injuries that involve it may put at risk the horses' sport life or its usefulness. The objective of this study is to compare the biomechanical properties of two PIPJ arthrodesis techniques using 4.5mm dynamic compression plate (DCP) in conjunction with two oblique abaxial transarticular 5.5mm cortical screws inserted in lag fashion and 7 hole 5.0mm "Y" locking compression plate (LCP) with one axial transarticular cortical screw inserted in lag fashion. It will be used twelve thoracic limb intact specimen from the first phalange to the foot. After full-limb preparations, two groups of six pieces each, will undergo arthrodesis with two kinds of plates methods of stabilizing adult equine forelimb PIP joints. Constructs will be submited to axial compression in single cycle to failure by biomechanical test. The failure of the screws or plate, and the force at wich it happen will be evaluated. Mean values for each fixation method will be compared using a paired t-test. (AU)
