Abstract

The great morphological variability of plant allows the characterization and identification of species, forming the basis of taxonomy. The number of characters used for recognition of species increased greatly over the history of classification of organisms and in recent decades, this increase was even greater because of advances coming from molecular studies. Currently techniques using molecular data associated with morphological data are excellent sources of information for studies of evolution and phylogenetic reconstruction. Asteraceae is the largest family of Eudicot Angiosperms with 24.000 species distributed in 1.600 genera. It is estimated that the diversity of the family in the Neotropics is approximately 580 genera and 8.040 species, while in Brazil 270 genera and 1960 species are referred, which places it as an important center of diversity of the family. Seeking to solve taxonomy and evolution questions, will be used new approaches associated with integrated interpretation of ali the results. This project is part of studies on Brazilian Asteraceae diversity and aims to reconstruct the phylogeny of the genera Pterocaulon and Wunderlichia, and develop studies of character evolution, taxonomy and cytogenetic. Scientific papers and presentations at scientific meetings will be produced for dissemination of the results of this study. It also will expand the partnership with national and international institutions. This study will broaden the knowledge about the diversity of the family, evaluative history and conservation of the taxa. The results of this study will be added in the new projects, expanding the knowledge of the family. (AU)
