Abstract

The Low Vale do Ribeira, part of the watershed of Ribeira de Iguape and South Coast, has soil and climate conditions that once led to major rice growing participation in the economy of the region, and that for economic reasons has been replaced over time by cultures tea, banana, peach palm and livestock farming. The region has the lowest Human Development Index of the São Paulo Satate showing few agricultural options, with strong appeal for alternatives to secure the farmer in his native land. The carrying of techniques for rice production as fertilization, test cultivars, sowing dates and use of growth regulator may allow improvements in crop management that results in proper development of plants and consequent increase in productivity and quality of the grains obtained. It is believed that with implementation of the studies directed on the problems/questions found in the region, with the purpose of create technology, the farmer can increasingly take up the rice cultivation, bringing in income generation, improved quality of life and progress for the region. As a strategy to achieve this goal propose the development of studies on the cultivation of rice, from planting to harvest, seen there high potential production of the region. (AU)
