Abstract
IMBICONT has the aim to provide future solutions for sustainable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in fruits and berries by a range of studies focusing on biological control options in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, and in Denmark. IMBICONT is interdisciplinary since the research involves molecular biology, applied entomology, microbiology, pest control science, application technology, and micro-economics, Close collaboration between the Brazilian team and the Danish team ensures that technology and methods, conceptual understanding as well as specific results will be exchanged. Joint leadership of all three Work Packages (WP's) and joint supervision of PhD students will contribute to achieve these goals. Three crops have been" chosen: strawberries in both countries, plus citrus in Brazil and apple in Denmark. Two groups of biocontrol organisms have been selected: insect pathogenic fungi and predators. We aim to explore new biodiversity of entomopathogens. Further, new strategies to enhance beneficial interactions with natural enemies will be designed. New production methods, formulation and application techniques will also be developed for unexplored entomopathogenic fungi. Finally, a micro-economical assessment of the value of biological control will be carried out in fruit and strawberry. Joint activities including workshops and PhD courses are planned. Besides the applied aspects, IMBICONT will also provide significant novel data on biodiversity, co-evolution and population interactions. (AU)
