Abstract

Pain is a negative influential factor on the recovery process of post-operatory patients, causing pulmonary alterations and complications and affecting their functional capacity. Thus it is plausible to introduce a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) used for pain relief and therefore reducing complications originated by pain on the post-operatory period. Objective: The objective of this paper is to assess the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on pain, mobility and pulmonary functioning for kidney donators. Methods: 60 patients will be placed at random in 2 groups: active TENS or placebo TENS. All patients will be assessed for pain intensity, pulmonary functioning (Maximal Inspiratory Pressure, Maximal Expiratory Pressure, Vital Capacity) and functional ability (Iowa Gait Test) before, during and 1 hour after TENS application. The data will be collected by one assessor who does not have access to the group allocation. (AU)
