Abstract

Although it is generally believed that there is an intimate association between the use of antimicrobial drugs and bacterial resistance, this has not been completely established. There are no populational studies designed to evaluate this association. The aim of our study is to describe the profile and tendency of bacterial resistance in bloodstream infections that occurred in intensive care units in all the State of São Paulo from March 2009 through February 2012 and to examine its geographic distribution. We intend to evaluate potential explanations for the distribution: a- consumption of antimicrobial drugs within hospitals and in the community; b- Human development index; c- Maternal and infant mortality; d- Resources of the hospitals; e- Availability of healthcare professionals within the area; f- Regional revenue; g- Per capita income. The sources of data will be: - infection data: State-wide program of notification of nosocomial infections;- consumption of antimicrobial drugs: data obtained by hiring a specialized company;- other data : national census done in 2010.This study is a cooperation between the Medical and the Public Health Schools of the University of São Paulo and its duration is estimated to be 2 years.
