Evaluation of peritoneal reaction after small colon enterotomy in horses treated with heparin

Abstract

The formation of adhesions in horses are the result peritoneal inflammatory response, and the main postoperative complication in abdominal surgery, resulting in chronic pain, occlusion or sub-ileus. Is essential to develop research that act in a manner appropriate adjunctive surgical techniques in the inhibition of adhesion. The objective was to evaluate the effect of the use of heparin in inhibiting the inflammatory reaction and the formation of abdominal adhesions in horses. Will be used eight horses that underwent small colon enterotomy via laparotomy paralumbar right fossa, divided into two groups of four animals, group 1, control (enterotomy), group 2 enterotomy and treatment with sodium heparin (150 IU / kg) subcutaneously every 12 hours for 5 days from the surgery. Clinical management will be performed daily by physical examination and laboratory blood count, coagulation and inflammatory acute phase proteins, analysis of peritoneal fluid evaluation including tissue plasminogen activator and plasminogen activator inhibitor of this (the pre-operative, 12, 24, 48 , 96 and 144 hours postoperative). After 15 days of enterotomy is performed by laparoscopy paralumbar left fossa to evaluate the control group (without heparin) reactions and possible changes observed in this way, due to the small colon enterotomy. A similar procedure will be performed in animals treated with heparin and compared the clinical and laparoscopic findings with the untreated animals and so to settle these issues before the heparin treatment in animals subjected to this procedure. It is considered that both the use of heparin in preventing postoperative peritoneal reactions, as well as the very action of the lower colon enterotomy in horses are aspects more specific investigations of applicants against what is currently displayed in scientific circles, which justifies the application in question and this material is intended to eventually study other therapeutic principles followed, many other drugs such as other routes of administration in this species.
