Motion analysis of the joints of the forelimbs and hind limbs in healthy sheep

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate kinematic parameters of the forelimb and hind limbs in Santa Ines healthy sheep to create a database. In addition, the study will analyze the influence of age on kinematic values. Twenty-one clinically healthy entire female sheep will be divided into three groups: Group 1 - seven animals aged from 8 to 12 months, Group 2 - seven animals aged from 2 to 4 years, and Group 3 - seven animals aged up to 5. Before start data collection, the sheep will be trained to be conducted to walking in a pre-determined space at constant velocity. Kinematic data will be collected by use of an 8-camera system. A minimum of 5 valid trials will be obtained from the right and left sides of each sheep, each trial with a complete stride cycle. The trials will be analyzed and normalized by use of a motion-analysis program (Vicon) to elaboration of the graphs. Flexion and extension joint angles (maximum, minimum, displacement), angular velocity (maximum, minimum), and angular acceleration (maximum, minimum) will be determined for the shoulder, elbow, carpal, hip, stifle, and tarsal joints. Kinematic data will be analyzed by a linear model for double repeated measurements. The animal side will be considering as factor intra-sheep and the group as factor inter-sheep. The sequential Bonferroni adjustment procedure will be used for the contrasts. Differences will be considered significant at p<0.05. (AU)
