Abstract

Immunesuppressed patients are vulnerable to infections such as those caused by Fusarium. This is a mold that causes infections mainly in patients with prolonged neutropenia. The environment, especially water, is the source of these infections. Classically Fusarium is detected in water by cultures that are not very sensitive, but are necessary to identify sources and avoid the exposure of suceptible patients. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of 2 methods (conventional cultures and polmerase chain reaction) in identifying Fusarium in artificially contaminated water samples.STerile water will be contaminated in the laboratory with different inocula of the following species: F. solani, F. moniliforme, F. verticilloides and F. oxysporum. Initially samples will contain 1, 10, 100, 500 and 1000 cells/mL. The water samples will be studied using conventional culturing after filtration and using PCR. (AU)
