Abstract

Objectives: to determine whether plasma and peritoneal fluid concentrations of the acute-phase proteins HMGB1, activin A and D-dimer change in calves with or without umbilical hernia before and after herniorrhaphy; to assess whether those variables in calves with umbilical hernias were altered, compared with findings in clinically normal calves; establish reference intervals for these acute-phase proteins in peritoneal fluid and plasma in calves with congenital umbilical hernias before and after herniorrhaphy; and determine whether one or all of these acute-phase proteins could be used as an inflammatory biomarker of abdominal cavity inflammatory response before and after herniorrhaphy. Animals: 20 Holstein calves with or without umbilical hernia. Procedures: 10 calves with umbilical hernias will undergo herniorrhaphy. Blood and peritoneal fluid samples from all 20 calves will be collected for determination of acute-phase protein concentrations on days 0 (before surgery), 1, 3, 5, 7, and 15. Data from the 2 groups will be compared. Clinical relevance: Reference intervals for these acute-phase proteins will be established for each group; the potential compartment to assess their presence will be determined, and a potential inflammatory biomarker of abdominal cavity inflammatory response before and after herniorrhaphy will be determined in calves with and without umbilical hernias.
