Abstract

Different model systems have contributed greatly to the knowledge of the basic principles of biology and also to elucidate specific aspects of the interaction between genes, gene regulation and developmental biology. Rhynchosciara americana arises as a system that has contributed to increasing knowledge of cell biology due to some practical advantages that distinguishes between the dipteran. The ovary of Rhynchosciara americana shows up for presenting interesting characteristics, including the synchronous development of oocytes and the fact that each one is associated with a single giant cell, a nurse cell. However, little is known about genes involved in both the maintenance of homeostasis, such as in communication between cells involved in oogenesis. In invertebrates, gap junction intercellular channels, that allow direct communication between two adjacent cells, are formed by proteins called innexin. Thus, the present project aims at a more detailed study of genes involved in intercellular communication, mainly one that encodes innexin 4 in the ovary of Rhynchosciara americana, since this protein has a preferential localization in germ cell lineages.
