Abstract

The main objective of wastewater treatment is the removal of organic matter and nutrients, enabling the production of a treated effluent that will allow its release into receiving water bodies. The biological treatment based on activated sludge techniques it is the most common in Brazil and worldwide, reaching a removal of the organic matter up to 90%, leaving, however, residual organic compounds from the metabolism and lyses of the organisms used in the treatment. The reuse of treated effluent, after application of a post-treatment process, for industrial or agriculture use, has been seen as an alternative to a more sustainable use of water resources. The known post-treatment systems reduce the organic matter to a level where conventional methods of quantification of the organic matter, such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), may not express the real presence of these organic compounds after the post-treatment. Therefore, methods such as molecular weight distribution have been tested for the characterization of the organic matter present in the liquid phase when subjected to the so-called tertiary treatment processes. Taking these factors into consideration, this project aims the characterization of wastewater treated by activated sludge processes subjected to physical and chemical treatment units consisting of coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation, especially with respect to its effect on removal of organic compounds in effluents treated by biological treatment.
