Abstract

The objective was to study the development of the mother-child relationship of women who developed obstetric pathologies during pregnancy, whose babies were at the intensive or semi-intensive care unit after delivery and the perspective of health professionals who care for these babies on the development of this relationship. A qualitative study will be conducted based on a purposeful sample of different types of participants. The two groups of participants will be women who received a diagnosis of an obstetrical pathology (arterial blood hypertension or gestational diabetes) during the last pregnancy, whose babies needed hospitalization after delivery in a neonatal semi-intensive or intensive care unit; and health professionals, who work in these units. Semi-structured interviews with open ended questions will be conducted during the period of time that the babies are at the hospital. All interviews will be verbatim transcribed, checked for accuracy; and the principal themes identified. Content analysis will be performed based on the main themes identified and organized according to the theoretical framework based on the concepts of primary maternal preoccupation and holding as defined by Donald Winnicott.
