Abstract

The general aim of this project is to provide a theoretical framework to approach the study of sexual selection in a broad geographic scale using the Neotropics as a reference to compare what we know of sexual selection and reproductive strategies in this and other environments of the planet. First, we will postulate broad predictions concerning the effect of environmental factors on reproductive behavior and sexually selected traits using arthropods as model organisms. The theoretical framework and the general predictions proposed in this initial part of the project will be the first product produced by the research group with the objective of stimulating research along these lines. Then, we will invest in taxon-oriented papers that will explore in details some of these predictions. With these papers we intend to provide empirical support for our theoretical framework using both the abundant information on sexual selection available in the literature and field data obtained by our own research group over the course of the project.
