The addition of disinfectants approved for the use in food industries during the period of preslaughter feed withdrawal of broilers and its action in the quality of fecal indicator bacteria and morphology of the gastrointestinal tract

Abstract

The objective of this experiment is to test whether the addition of disinfectants approved for the use in the food industry to drinking water during a 12-hour pre-slaughter feed withdrawal period can efficiently reduce the quantities of microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli and Enterococci, in broiler crops and ceca. Reduction of these microorganisms would likely also reduce pathogenesis post-slaughterhouse. It will be also investigated if these disinfectants will cause some intestinal damage that can cause the dissemination of microorganisms to the carcass. A total of 60 Cobb male broilers will be used. Samples of crop and cecal content will be collected from 10 birds in each treatment (without feed withdrawal at the beginning of the pre-slaughter period, after 12 hours of feed withdrawal without disinfectant addition, after 12 hours of feed withdrawal with quaternary ammonium-based-disinfectant, after 12 hours of feed withdrawal with iodine-based-disinfectant, after 12 hours of feed withdrawal with peracetic acid-based-disinfectant, after 12 hours of feed withdrawal with biguanide-based-disinfectant). The Most Probable Number (MPN) of Escherichia coli and Enterococci in the drinking water, crop and cecal content; and the morphometry and scanning electron microscopy from duodenum e jejunum will be determined and analyzed.
