Abstract

During my visit to the USP in July 1997, I plan to work on one or more of the following projects: 1) With Herve Guiol, I hope to investigate properties of the contact process with asymmetric stirring, building on the work of Konno and Katori, who have worked on the symmetric case. We hope that by combining his knowledge of techniques that have been used to study the asymmetric exclusion process with my knowledge of the contact process we can make progress in this area, especially in finding bounds on critical values, 2) Also with Herve Guiol and hopefully Pablo Ferrari, I hope to study the macroscopic behaviours under hydrodynamic scalling of a long-range exclusion process with infinitely many slow-moving particles. 3) Finally, I hope to extend some work I have been doing with Geoffrey Grimmett (of Cambridge University) on functional central limit theorems for random walks on a lattice with a low density of obstacles that deflect the particle. The work we have clone so far, in which the process is reversible, is based on a famous theorem due to Pablo Ferrari and others. Having completed the reversible case, I intend to study related problems where the process is not reversible. (AU)
