Abstract
The objectives for this project are to improve our understanding of the global distribution of polymorphism (that is allelic variants, the different forms of a gene) in immune-related genes, the selective and demographic forces that have shaped these distributions, and the implications of these complex genetic systems for anthropological, disease association, and transplantation studies. The proposed project involves a primary collaboration with Dr. Diogo Meyer of the Instituto de Biociências at the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), São Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Meyer's background in evolutionary biology and my background in biostatistics and statistical genetics are highly complementary. Each of us bring important strengths to our collaboration on population genetic studies of the genes involved in the immune system. (AU)
