Abstract

The aim of the present co-operative project is to understand the dynamics of nestgrowth in the leaf-cutting ant Atta laevigata, and so the emergence of a functionalnest architecture. Functional architecture is defined as the spatial arrangement of thenest chambers, both for fungus gardens and refuse, and the establishment of theunderground foraging tunnels. It is expected that the combination of field and laboratory research will highlight somemechanisms underlying the ontogeny of the nest architecture in leaf-cutting antnests, and will help understand the growth dynamics of a nest as a collectivestructure.
