Abstract

Significant advances in the fundamental understanding of crystallization processes has emerged in the last 4 decades from systematic experimental and theoretical studies of stoichiometric model glasses, i.e. in which the crystal phase has the same composition as the parent glass. This project is aimed at the experimental estimation of the nucleation and growth rates as a function of time and temperature and associated theoretical treatment of these data for two types of highly non-stoichiometric glasses: i) Photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass; a Na-Al-Zn-Br-F-silicate glass doped with Ce, Ag, Sb, and Sn and ii) glasses belonging to the meta-silicate section with compositions between 1Na2O*1CaO*2SiO2 (N1C1S2) and 2Na2O*1CaO*3SiO2 (N2C1S3), and a glass of composition 1Li2O*2CaO*3SiO2 for which there is no corresponding crystal phase, hence two or more phases should crystallize out on heating.
