Abstract
There are currently 182 impact structures known on Earth, of which only six are located in Brazil, a country in which only recently this research theme has received due attention. The research group at the Institute of Geosciences/Unicamp, led by the proponent of this project, has been working in the Brazilian impact structures in recent years and the results have allowed to identify evidence of this rare type of geological process, as well as its geological and geophysical characterization. This has been supporting the development of important collaborative projects with other Brazilian and foreign research groups, leveraging the advance of the scientific knowledge about the Brazilian impact structures by means of scientific articles in international journals and in important international science foruns dedicated to the subject of planetary geology. The Parnaíba Basin contains several circular structure with potential to have been formed by meteorite impacts. The Santa Marta (PI) structure, in particular, has shown to be a strong candidate after disclosing, in a previous preliminary study carried out by the same research group, geophysical characteristics compatible with those expected for impact structures. This proposal aims to carry on with the study of the nature of the Santa Marta structures, by means of detailed geological mapping and geophysical characterization, with the objective of identify macro and microscopic shock features which might support its impact origin, together with the analysis of the geophysical signature and numerical modeling of the formation of the structure. The project will be developed through a collaborative of from three Brazilian universities (Unicamp, USP and UFC) and one German university (Humboldt-University-Museum für Naturkunde), with the participation of at least one post-graduate student (MSc level). The intent is to contribute to the understanding of the gênesis, formation, structuring and deformation of the Santa Marta structure, as well as to the understanding of the crustal evolution of the Parnaíba Basin and of the impact record of Brazil and of the Earth.
