Abstract

Brazil is an important consumer, producer and exporter of fresh fruit. However, much production is lost due to the high incidence of post-harvest diseases. In most of the cases the pathogens causing post-harvest diseases are present in a quiescent form in apparently healthy fruit at the time of shipment, showing the symptoms during the transport and unloading of goods at destination, resulting ina a complete container of fruit rejection by the poor quality of the product, causing large losses. This has led farmers to use pesticides in the post-harvest treatment of fruits, in a indiscriminately and empirical way, using even, in some cases, products not registered for that culture, due to the lack of products recommended for this purpose, causing the chemical contamination of the product, endangering the population health, besides leading the emergence of resistant strains of pathogens, making control more and more inefficient. Consumers are more aware and the international fruit market is increasingly restricting the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL), imposing strict monitoring, creating non-tariff barriers in the negotiation of the national fruit. The reduction or elimination of pesticides in control of postharvest diseases is therefore an economic imperative, not only an option anymore. There is therefore an urgent and a growing demand for natural technologies, clean and safe for post-harvest treatment of fruit for the control of rot, with no chemical residues. This project proposes to provide a new technological model of postharvest treatment of fruits that integrates physical control methods: heat treatment or by non-ionizing radiation with biological control in the management of postharvest diseases of mango, citros and melon.
