Abstract

Scientific evidences show that there is difference on pain experienced between men and women, and that the sensory variability of women can be due to variations of ovarian hormones during the menstrual cycle. The aim of this study is to investigate the somatosensory (thermal, pain, tactile, vibration and electric), gustative and olfactory thresholds during the menstrual cycle of healthy women and their association with the concentrations of estrogen and progesterone at saliva. We will evaluate 32 women aged between 18 and 45 years old with regular menstrual cycles and with no pain-related comorbidities. All subjects will be instructed regarding the purposes of this study and it will include those that have consented to participate singning the consent form. The women will be evaluated at three phases of the menstrual cycle: menstrual phase, follicular phase and luteal phase. The methods will include saliva collection at the beginning of each session to evaluate the levels of estradiol and progesterone; and somatosensory (pain, tactile, cold, warm, vibration and electric), gustative (sweet, salty, sour and bitter) and olfactory thresholds. The somatosensory thresholds will be evaluated at the territory of the maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerver and at the medial area of the forearm, both at the right side. The data will be tabulated and the tests will include repeated measures analysis and the McNemar test. All statistical calculations will be performed using SPSS 17.0 (SPSS Inc.,Illinois,USA). The level of significance Will be 5%. (AU)
