Abstract

The structural health monitoring (SHM) has been of growing interest of the international scientific community in recent years. The purpose of SHM systems is to monitor a certain structure and to detect, preferably during their normal operating conditions, an incipient structural damage, providing a high level of safety and reducing maintenance costs. Among the various possible techniques for developing a SHM system, the electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique is distinguished by using low-cost and small piezoelectric transducers, which makes the technique less invasive and allows the installation of multiple transducers for monitoring large areas of the structure. Although the EMI technique has been studied for decades, some practical issues have limited its implementation effectively. The objective of this research project is to explore two practical issues: the correct design of piezoelectric transducers and the temperature effects compensation. Based on the scientific relevant and technological potential of the proposed project, it is expected to obtain a significant scientific production related to the two themes as well as the advising of undergraduate and postgraduate students, and possibly an orientation for new projects.
