Abstract

Background: Metabolic abnormalities are common in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) and are responsible for the high prevalence of diabetes and metabolic syndrome in this population. Several neurobiological systems related to energetic metabolism have been shown to be abnormal in BD. Recent theories postulated that the brain regulates its own nutrient supply. Hypothesis: metabolic abnormalities observed in BD result of an unefficient of energetic brain supply and its compensatory responses. Objectives: Investigate energetic metabolism of individuals with BD accross illness evolution. Methods: Case-control study comparing 3 groups: 30 patients with BD with less than 5 years of evolution, 30 patients with BD with more than 10 years of evolution and 30 healthy controls. All the subjects will be submitted to psychiatric interview. Blood samples will be obtained for analysis of biomarkers related to neuroplasticity, astrocitary function, glucose metabolism, oxidative stress, stress response, lipids and regulatory hormones. Clinical importance: The proposed study is the first to involve a comprehensive and integrated platform of energetic metabolism. If differences in energetic metabolism were found accross stages, this study will open new avenues for research in pathophysiology of BD and development of new and efficient therapeutic strategies.
